Microsoft to Release On-Premises Cloud Computing in 2010 | AzureJournal

It was inevitable, and I just missed the release by a few months, however, Microsoft is working hard on releasing the “Private Cloud”, your own on-premises cloud computing software.

With the Microsoft cloud strategy, organizations can now move towards cloud computing models with the confidence that their existing investments in their datacenter are safe, and can be leveraged in this new paradigm. Existing applications and services will be able to move to the private cloud without the need to learn unproven technologies or introduce unnecessary complexity.

Update: lots of people asked me about whether this is true or not, well, if is on the internet, it must be true:) …

The Microsoft Private Cloud enables:

Management of the datacenter fabric as a single pool of resources
Delivery of scalable applications and workloads
Focus on the management of the datacenter service and it’s dependencies
Federation of services across the full cloud continuum

Microsoft is enabling customers to build the foundation for a private cloud infrastructure using Windows Server and System Center family of products with the Dynamic Data Center Toolkit for Enterprises, availability scheduled in the first half of 2010.

The Dynamic Data Center Toolkit for Enterprises is a free, partner-extensible toolkit that will enable datacenters to dynamically pool, allocate, and manage resources to enable IT as a service. Whether you’re an enterprise customer, a systems integrator, or an independent software vendor, the toolkit will help you create agile, virtualized IT infrastructures. You’ll get:

An architectural roadmap, deployment guidance, and best practices.
Familiar tools that are compatible with existing applications.
Interoperability with public clouds.

I am not sure why this name, I don’t get it. I hope they’ll change it to include Azure somewhere, because people already make the connection between Azure-Cloud. Exciting times for cloud computing.

With this new effort, Microsoft is taking the lead in Cloud computing. Amazon, Google will not provide any time soon (maybe never) on-premises cloud computing. This will open the doors to small software companies to build tools(management, monitoring, custom solutions) to accompany the on-premises offerings from Microsoft.
